Washington Metro Objectivism Discussion (WMOD) November 18, 1998 "How to Fight the Welfare State" By David Kelley David Kelley will discuss his recent book, _A Life of One's Own: Individual Rights and the Welfare State_, recently published by the Cato Institute. The focus of his remarks will be his strategy in writing the book: the audience it was intended for and the techniques he used in the effort to persuade that audience, including the use of historical and statistical information as well as philosophical arguments. He will also put this project in the wider context of defending capitalism on philosophical grounds as opposed to purely economic ones. A well-known philosopher, teacher, and writer, David Kelley is executive director of the Institute for Objectivist Studies in Poughkeepsie, NY. In addition to A Life of One's Own, Dr. Kelley's books include _The Evidence of the Senses_, a treatise on sense-perception; _The Art of Reasoning_, a widely used college logic textbook; _Truth and Toleration_, an essay on the principles of intellectual exchange and the Objectivist movement; and _Unrugged Individualism: The Selfish Basis of Benevolence_. His many articles on social and political issues have appeared in _Barrons, Harpers_, and elsewhere. He also lectures widely and is a frequent talk show host. He was recently featured on John Stossel's ABC-TV special, "Greed."
