Washington Metro Objectivism Discussion (WMOD) February 15, 1995 Meeting Mark Brady on "Intellectual Property" Mark Brady will speak on "Intellectual Property" at the Wednesday February 15 monthly meeting of WMOD. Intellectual Property embraces patents, copyright, trademarks, and the right of publicity. This talk will focus on patents and copyright, explain how they differ from other forms of private property and from each other, and examine the philosophical and economic justification for each. The presentation will also include some account of the history of intellectual property and of the vigorous debates that have surrounded this issue. As an introduction, you might read Ayn Rand's essay "Patents and Copyrights" in CAPITALISM THE UNKNOWN IDEAL before the meeting. Mark Brady was born and raised near London and graduated in Philosophy, Politics & Economics from Oxford University. He studied economics at NYU and participated in the Austrian economics colloquium there. Mark has taught economics in Britain, Ireland and California; and he has worked in airline economics. Since 1992 he has worked for the Institute for Humane Studies in Fairfax, VA with responsibilities for seminars, fellowships and student-mentoring. Mark is a bibliophile with a wide range of interests, including the topography of London. When and Where?
