Radon Fan Selection
Radon fan selection for Sub-Slab Depressurization (SSD) systems is not
an exact science because the performance depends primarily on the
porosity of the material beneath the slab. In order to work, the
SSD system must create a negative pressure under all parts of the
slab so that soil gas containing radon can not leak into the house
through slab cracks.

Below are some Infiltec rules-of-thumb for radon fan selection:
- a. Radon Gas Levels, generally DO NOT play much of a role
in SSD radon fan selection. We generally install the same radon gas mitigation
system in a house with 401 pCi/L, as a house with 4.1 pCi/L. By far the
most important factor is whether there is a porous layer, like gravel,
under the slab.
- b. Low-Power Fans, like the
RP140, work well in SSD systems for
houses that have a porous sub-slab gravel layer and a well-sealed
slab. We find that these low-power fans last longer and are
quieter, so we recommend them to home builders who are installing
SSD during construction. Use 3" or 4" pipe and a single slab penetration.
- c. Medium-Power Fans, like the
XP151 or XP201 or the RP145 all work well for
larger slabs and porous sub-slab gravel layers, or for smaller slabs
with less porous sub-slab material. Use 3" or 4" pipe and a single slab
penetration.
- d. High-Flow Fans, like the
XR261, are the most common fans
for retrofit installations because they have the power to overcome
both air leakage and the poor sub-slab porosity caused by lack of sub-slab
gravel. 4" pipe is generally used with these fans with one or more
slab penetrations. For even higher flows, the
RP265 has the same 6" openings
as an XR261, but significantly higher performance.
- e. High-Suction Fans, like the
GP301, GP401, GP501 & GP500,
are used in houses where
there is very poor porosity material under the slab, such as sand or clay,
and there is low air flow. Use 3" pipe and put in several slab penetrations.
- f. Very-High-Flow Fans, like the
FR225E and FR250E, are used
for large slabs like those found in schools and office buildings. They
require exhaust pipes of 6" to 10" to minimize flow resistance, and
each section of the slab that is isolated by subslab barriers requires
separate slab penetrations. Several exhaust pipes are often manifolded into
one large exhaust pipe in order to minimize roof penetrations.
- g. Very-High-Suction Fans, like the
HS2000, HS3000 and HS5000, provide
much higher suction than tube fans for tough mitigations that involve poor
permeability subslab material like sand and clay. These fans have internal
condensate bypass, and brackets for vertical mounting indoors and outdoors.
The HS2000 provides both high suction and high flow for larger areas like
schools and commercial buildings. The HS3000 provides high suction for
smaller residential sized slabs. The HS5000 is designed for extremely tight
subslab material and restricted numbers of suction holes. It is also useful
at high altitudes.
